Lift and move material and equipment by means of a forklift

DESCRIPTION

Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 244365)

When employees use smart lifting practices, such lift trucks they are less likely to suffer from back sprains, muscle pulls, wrist injuries, elbow injuries, spinal injuries, and other injuries caused by lifting heavy objects. Manual lifting heavy items is one of the leading causes of injury in the workplace. Forklift is a powered industrial truck used to lift and move materials over short distances.

Lifting operations in construction or warehousing occur during transportation of material from the storage place to the place where it is being processed, and during the processing of materials. A load includes any material or people that are lifted or lowered by lifting equipment.

Successful learner of this standard will be able to:

  • Explain the specified requirements pertaining to lifting, securing, transferring and positioning of loads.
  • Prepare for lifting, securing, transferring and positioning of loads.
  • Operate the forklift.
  • Perform post-lifting, securing, transferring and positioning activities.
