An Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder is a risk-based first aid provider who plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in the workplace. Trained to assess potential risks and hazards, they develop effective emergency response plans and deliver immediate medical care in the event of an accident or injury.By identifying workplace risks, they help minimise the impact of incidents and contribute to safer working environments with improved survival outcomes. Their role also supports compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, strengthening overall workplace safety systems.
In addition, an Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder is trained to act quickly and effectively during emergencies. They provide immediate medical assistance in critical or life-threatening situations while ensuring proper risk assessment and response procedures are followed.
This skills programme is developed to enable a qualified learner to:
- Assist with the coordination and management of first aid providers’ activities on an emergency scene.
- Provide advanced emergency first aid medical care for a range of medical conditions to patients in critical or life-threatening situations.
- Provide wound care within advanced emergency first aid scope.
- Provide life support interventions on the incident scene and through advanced emergency first aid techniques.
- Handover patient with relevant report on the patient’s condition and treatment

Who Should Attend?
This QCTO-accredited Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder course is the highest level of first aid training offered by SACTS, designed for experienced first aiders who need to operate at an advanced level in critical and life-threatening emergency situations. It is specifically recommended for:
- Intermediate Emergency First Aid Responders — this is the direct progression qualification; entry requires a Skills Certificate in Intermediate Emergency First Aid at NQF Level 3
- Designated workplace first aiders in high-risk industries — including mining, construction, manufacturing, petrochemical and heavy engineering environments where serious trauma, burns and life-threatening emergencies are more likely to occur
- Emergency response team leaders — who assist with the coordination and management of first aid providers’ activities on an emergency scene
- Security and armed response personnel — who are regularly first on scene at incidents involving trauma, cardiac events and other medical emergencies
- Offshore, maritime and remote site workers — operating in environments where ambulance response times are long and advanced first aid capability is critical
- Sports and event safety officials — responsible for medical response at large gatherings, sporting events and public venues
- Corporate health and wellness professionals — who manage occupational health programmes and need advanced clinical knowledge to support their teams
- Aspiring emergency medical technicians (EMTs) — using this qualification as a stepping stone towards a formal EMS career pathway
