Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 242981)
A Reach Truck is a powered industrial truck used to lift and move materials over short distances.Operators who are not adequately trained in Reach Truck operations are at great risk of injury because of their lack of understanding in the principles of operations that allow a Lift Truck to lift and move heavy loads.
This programme will assist the learner operator in becoming a fully qualified Reach Truck operator who has the knowledge, skills and experience to operate a Reach Truck in a safe and professional manner. This will allow certified operator by adding value to any organization.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Inspecting and recording the operational fitness of battery powered reach trucks.
- Identifying and classifying freight/loads.
- Handling, loading and storing freight.
- Achieving maximum work performance of battery powered lifting equipment and attachments.
- Operating freight equipment.
- Accessing available emergency support systems and services.

The person credited with this course is able to operate a basic purpose Reach truck. They are able to access emergency support and services in the case of an emergency while operating a reach truck. The person is also able to identify and classify the load, handle and move the freight while operating the lifting equipment in accordance with standards and its performance capabilities. Reach Truck Course shall include:
- F6: Pedestrian-controlled reach truck below rated capacity of 2000kg.
- F7: Pedestrian-controlled reach truck above rated capacity of 2000kg.
- F12: Pallet lift truck with battery power propulsion (specify capacity).
Entry level requirements into this programme?
All new entrants intended under this code (Novice or Re-licensing) shall provide training institution with the required documents as specified under the National Code Of Practice (NCOP No 43835) Promulgated 23 October 2020
- An employer declaration or medical certificate confirming the medical fitness of the learner to undergo the intended training
- An eye test results issued by a person trained to carry out such tests
- All new entrants intended under this code will be required to hold at least a Grade 9 (Std 7) school certificate
- Learners shall provide training institution with a valid certified copy of his/her Identity Document
- Employers must provide a valid copy of Lift Truck Load Test Certificate
Who Should Attend?
This TETA-accredited Defined Purpose Reach Truck course is the entry-level reach truck qualification, designed for anyone who operates or is required to operate pedestrian-controlled and basic battery-powered reach trucks in a warehouse or distribution environment. It is specifically recommended for:
- New reach truck operators (Novice) — individuals with no prior reach truck licence who need to become fully qualified to operate defined purpose reach trucks at entry level
- Existing operators due for re-certification — operators required to renew their certification under the National Code of Practice (NCOP No 43835)
- Warehouse and distribution centre workers — who need to identify and classify freight, handle and move loads, and operate battery-powered lifting equipment in accordance with standards and performance capabilities
- Pedestrian-controlled reach truck operators — covering codes F6 and F7, used for moving loads below and above 2,000kg in standard warehouse aisles
- Pallet lift truck operators — covering code F12, battery-powered pallet trucks used for moving and stacking palletised loads
- Retail, grocery and FMCG warehouse staff — handling high volumes of palletised stock in standard aisle warehouse environments
- New entrants to the warehousing and logistics industry — this course is the ideal starting point before progressing to the Advanced Defined Purpose Reach Truck qualification
- Maintenance technicians — responsible for battery maintenance, daily inspections and defect reporting on reach trucks
- Warehouse supervisors and safety officers — ensuring reach truck operations comply with the OHS Act and Driven Machinery Regulations
