The main objective of conducting an incident and investigation is above all “prevention”. Master safe excavation procedures to protect people, prevent accidents, and ensure legal compliance on every worksite.

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to implement safe working procedures for open holes and deep excavations. It covers legal health and safety responsibilities, hazard identification, risk control measures, excavation support methods, the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency procedures, and safe work practices to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with workplace and legislative requirements.

Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • Identify unsafe working conditions relating to excavations.

Learners who complete this unit standard will be able to understand legal health and safety responsibilities, identify excavation hazards, apply safe excavation methods, take responsibility for their own safety and that of others, and follow safe work practices when working in or near open holes and deep excavations. The area of focus of this programme will be;

Explain legal responsibilities for health and safety

  • Explain employer and employee legal duties.
  • Identify health and safety legislation.
  • Explain consequences of non-compliance.

Identify unsafe working conditions

  • Identify excavation hazards.
  • Apply hazard control measures.
  • Explain accident prevention procedures.
  • Describe emergency procedures.
  • Follow post-accident procedures.

Determine methods of achieving health and safety

  • Identify areas requiring ground support.
  • Select suitable support methods.
  • Compare excavation support systems.
  • Prevent falling objects safely.

Undertake responsibility for safety of self and others

  • Maintain stable excavation support.
  • Select and use correct PPE.
  • Explain importance of wearing PPE.
  • Identify consequences of unsafe work.

Conduct safe work practices

  • Install and use guardrails correctly.
  • Erect required safety signs and barriers.
  • Use protective clothing and equipment.
  • Keep walkways and access routes clear.
  • Monitor and control air quality.
  • Remove support systems safely after work.

Entry Level Requirements Into This Programme

  • Certified copy of your ID document.
  • School certificate Grade 10 or Skills certificate equivalent NQF Level 3
