DESCRIPTION
Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 242972)
A Lift Truck is a powered industrial truck used to lift and move materials over short distances.Operators who are not adequately trained in Reach Truck operations are at great risk of injury because of their lack of understanding in the principles of operations that allow a Reach Truck to lift and move heavy loads.
This course will assist the learner operator in becoming a fully qualified Reach Truck operator who has the knowledge, skills and experience to operate a Reach Truck in a safe and professional manner. This will allow certified operator by adding value to any organization.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Access available emergency support systems and services in case of incidents and accidents
- Identify and classifying freight/loads
- Handle, loading and storing freight
- Achieve maximum work performance of battery powered lifting equipment and attachments

Lift Truck codes shall include:
- F5: Reach Lift truck up to rated capacity of 2500kg.
- F8: Order Picking lift truck – for first and second level racking (Narrow aisle/wide aisle) (NA/WA).
- F9: Order Picking lift truck – for all level racking including high rise (NA/WA).
- F13: VNA (Very narrow aisle) lift truck, non-elevating cab, to service all levels.
- F14: VNA lift truck, elevating cab, to service all levels.
- F15: Rail mounted stacker lift truck with non-elevating cab.
- F16: Rail mounted stacker lift truck with elevating cab.
Entry level requirements into this programme?
All new entrants intended under this code (Novice or Re-licensing) shall provide training institution with the required documents as specified under the National Code Of Practice (NCOP No 43835) Promulgated 23 October 2020
- An employer declaration or medical certificate confirming the medical fitness of the learner to undergo the intended training
- An eye test results issued by a person trained to carry out such tests
- All new entrants intended under this code will be required to hold at least a Grade 9 (Std 7) school certificate
- Learners shall provide training institution with a valid certified copy of his/her Identity Document
- Employers must provide a valid copy of Lift Truck Load Test Certificate
Who Should Attend?
This TETA-accredited Advanced Defined Purpose Reach Truck course is designed for anyone who operates or is required to operate battery-powered reach trucks and specialised narrow aisle lifting equipment in a warehouse or distribution environment. It is specifically recommended for:
- New reach truck operators (Novice) — individuals with no prior reach truck licence who need to become fully qualified to operate advanced defined purpose lift trucks
- Existing operators due for re-certification — operators required to renew their certification under the National Code of Practice (NCOP No 43835)
- Warehouse and distribution centre operators — who need to identify and classify freight, handle and move loads, and operate lifting equipment in accordance with standards and performance capabilities sacts
- Narrow aisle and very narrow aisle (VNA) operators — working in high-density racking environments requiring specialised reach truck skills across multiple lift truck codes including F5, F8, F9, F13, F14, F15 and F16
- Order picking personnel — operating order picking lift trucks for first, second and all-level racking in narrow and wide aisle configurations sacts
- Cold storage and food distribution workers — using battery-powered reach trucks in temperature-controlled warehouse environments
- Retail and logistics centre staff — responsible for the efficient and safe movement and storage of high-volume stock
- Maintenance technicians — who monitor the operational fitness of reach trucks including battery maintenance, daily checks and defect reporting
- Warehouse supervisors and safety officers — responsible for ensuring reach truck operations are compliant with the OHS Act and Driven Machinery Regulations
