Protect your team from one of the most dangerous hazards on any construction site — with this CETA-accredited Excavation Safety Training course from SACTS

DESCRIPTION

Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 365183)

Excavation failures are particularly dangerous because they may occur quickly, limiting the ability of workers (and in some cases others nearby) to escape, especially if the collapse is extensive.

Open holes and deep excavation are among the most hazardous construction operations. The speed of an excavation collapse increases the risk associated with this type of work. The consequences are significant as the falling earth can bury or crush any person in its path resulting in death by suffocation or internal crush injuries. Excavations refer to trenches, drilled holes, excavated holes and embankments.

Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • Explain the legal responsibilities for Health and Safety when working in or alongside excavations.
  • Identify unsafe working conditions relating to excavations.
  • Determine methods of achieving health and safety when working in or alongside excavations.
  • Undertake responsibility for safety of self and others.
  • Conduct safe work practices.

  • Construction and civil engineering workers — regularly working in, around or alongside trenches, drilled holes, excavated holes and embankments on building and infrastructure projects
  • Excavator and TLB operators — operating machinery that creates open holes and deep excavations on construction and civil engineering sites
  • Pipeline and utility installation teams — working in trenches for water, sewer, electrical and telecommunications infrastructure projects across South Africa
  • Geotechnical and earthworks contractors — responsible for the safe management of excavation operations on large-scale civil construction projects
  • Mining and quarrying personnel — working in or alongside open excavations and embankments in surface and open-cast mining environments
  • Plumbers and drainage contractors — performing trench excavation work for pipe installation and maintenance in residential and commercial environments
  • Site supervisors and foremen — responsible for ensuring that all workers in and around excavations comply with legal health and safety requirements under the OHS Act and Construction Regulations
  • Health and safety officers and SHE Representatives — requiring a thorough understanding of excavation hazards, emergency procedures and safe work practices
