Understanding HIV/AIDS in the Workplace

This module builds a solid foundation of HIV/AIDS knowledge relevant to the South African workplace. Learners explore what HIV and AIDS are, how the virus is transmitted through body fluids, and how the global and local HIV/AIDS crisis affects employees personally and professionally. Topics include stigma and discrimination, gender and socio-cultural factors, and the legislative and policy framework governing HIV/AIDS in the workplace — including ILO guidelines, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, and CETA sector requirements. By the end of this module, learners can confidently demonstrate an understanding of HIV/AIDS issues affecting employees personally and in the workplace.

Identifying HIV Transmission Risks and Behaviours

This module focuses on the behaviours and contexts that create a risk of HIV transmission. Learners examine major behavioural risk factors, the social and environmental contexts that influence those risks, and practical means of identifying and reducing exposure in a workplace setting. Emphasis is placed on non-discrimination, first aid protocols, handling of body fluids, sharps management, and creating a safe and supportive work environment. Learners leave equipped to identify behaviours that may create a risk of HIV transmission and take appropriate preventive action.

Rights, Responsibilities, and Workplace HIV/AIDS Policy

This module covers the legal and procedural obligations of both employers and employees under South African HIV/AIDS workplace policy. Learners study voluntary counselling and testing, confidentiality and disclosure, grievance and disciplinary procedures, wellness programmes, and employee benefit schemes. Practical guidance is given on supporting HIV-positive colleagues, managing accommodation and leave, and implementing a compliant workplace HIV/AIDS programme. Learners graduate able to explain employee rights and responsibilities and to identify and apply relevant national, industry, and company policies and procedures for dealing with HIV/AIDS in the workplace.
