Operate a tractor
A tractor is one of the most versatile and widely used machines in South African agriculture, construction and mining. Train your operators to use it safely, professionally and legally — with this CETA-accredited Tractor Operator Training course from SACTS.
DESCRIPTION
Unit Standard 262804
A tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort at slow speeds, for the purposes of towing a trailer or machinery such as that used in agriculture, mining or construction. Most commonly, the term is used to describe a farm vehicle that provides the power and traction to mechanise agricultural tasks — especially tillage — but nowadays a great variety of tasks. SactsFurthermore, a modern tractor is one of the most versatile machines in South African industry — capable of powering a wide range of attachments including mowers, rotary tillers, dozers, trenchers, loaders and backhoes. As a result, qualified tractor operators are in high demand across agriculture, construction and mining sectors throughout South Africa.
Why Tractor Operator Training Matters
An untrained tractor operator is a serious risk to themselves, their colleagues and the public. Furthermore, the OHS Act and Construction Regulations require all construction plant operators to be trained and competent before operating any machine on site. As a result, investing in tractor operator training protects your people, reduces your risk and keeps your business legally compliant.
Successful candidates credited with this unit standard are able to:
- Demonstrating knowledge of the functions of a tractor.
- Planning for work activities and prepare work area.
- Starting and shutting down tractor.
- Operating tractor.
- Transporting tractor to and from site.

The qualifying learner will be able to operate a tractor by understanding the functions of starting, shutting down and operating procedures for the machine. Learners who master the applied competence described in this course will contribute to the development of a professional community of Construction Plant operators. The area of focus of this course will be;
Knowledge of the Functions of a Tractor
Understanding the Tractor
A tractor is an engineering vehicle specifically designed to deliver a high tractive effort at slow speeds, for the purposes of towing a trailer or machinery such as that used in agriculture, mining or construction. This module consequently introduces learners to the key components, parts and functions of a tractor — giving them the foundational knowledge required to operate the machine safely and professionally in any agricultural, construction or mining environment.
Parts and Components
Furthermore, learners will develop a thorough understanding of the tractor’s key components — including:
- ROPS cab, fuel tank, fuel tank filler cap, hydraulic outlet port, engine side panels, tool box and battery isolator
- Hydraulic oil reservoir, axle options and hydraulic reservoir
- Engine, transmission, differential and final drives, steering system and braking system
- Cooling system, fuel system and electrical systems
As a result, learners will be able to identify and describe the function of every major component before they begin operating the machine.
Controls and Instrument Panel
In addition, learners will be introduced to the full range of controls and instruments in the operator’s cab — including:
- Command Centre Panel, Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) and basic EMS symbols
- EMS warning categories at Levels 1, 2 and 3
- Temperature gauges, light switches, windshield wiper and washer controls
- Heating and air conditioning controls, floor heater control switch, fan control and temperature control
Consequently, learners will understand the purpose and function of every control before the machine is started for the first time.
Tractor Safety and Legislative Requirements
Understanding Safe Operating Principles
Safety is the foundation of every professional tractor operation. This module therefore equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of tractor safety principles — covering the destined use of the machine, general safety information and the legal obligations of the operator under the OHS Act and Construction Regulations.
The Ten Commandments of Tractor Safety
Furthermore, learners will develop a thorough understanding of the ten commandments of tractor safety — including:
- Know your tractor, understand Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) and safety labels
- Wear well-fitted protective clothing, know the work area in advance and ensure a competent operator is always in control
- No riders rule, awareness of children in the work area, safe starting procedures and avoiding speeding
Attachment Safety
In addition, learners will develop a working knowledge of the safe operation of a range of tractor attachments — including:
- Mower safety, rotary tiller safety, dozer safety, trencher safety, loader safety and backhoe safety
Power Take-Off (PTO) Safety
Furthermore, learners will understand the specific hazards associated with the Power Take-Off (PTO) system — including entanglement risks, correct guarding requirements and safe engagement and disengagement procedures. As a result, learners will be able to operate the PTO safely and confidently across a range of attachment applications.
Planning for Work Activities and Preparing the Work Area
Pre-Operation Planning
Before any tractor operation begins, a qualified operator must plan carefully and prepare the work area thoroughly. This module consequently equips learners with the skills to assess site conditions, identify hazards and develop a safe work plan — ensuring that all work is carried out safely, efficiently and in full compliance with the OHS Act and Construction Regulations.
Pre-Start and Daily Checks
Furthermore, learners will develop the knowledge and practical skills to conduct a comprehensive daily pre-start inspection of the tractor — including:
- Daily checks, pre-start checks and start-up checks
- Completion of the daily pre-start checklist before the machine is started
- Checking all fluid levels, tyre pressures, safety systems and control functions
Safe Shutdown Procedures
In addition, this module covers the correct shutdown and close-down procedures for the tractor — including safe parking, engaging the parking brake, lowering all attachments to the ground and completing logbooks and other post-operation checklists. Furthermore, learners will learn how to report any defects or maintenance requirements identified during the work shift.
Operating the Tractor
Principles of Operation
This is the core knowledge module of the course — covering the fundamental operating principles that every professional tractor operator must understand. Learners will therefore develop a thorough understanding of the tractor’s key mechanical systems — including:
- Transmission or gearbox, differential and final drives, steering systems and hydraulic system
- Fuel system, electrical systems, braking system and cooling system
Proximity and Hazard Awareness
Furthermore, learners will develop a working knowledge of hazard awareness during tractor operations — including proximity of other machines, warning devices, warning signals and safety features. In addition, learners will learn how to identify and respond to common tractor faults and operational issues before they escalate into equipment damage or operator injury.
Troubleshooting
As a result of completing this module, learners will be able to identify, assess and report common tractor faults — including engine, hydraulic, electrical and transmission issues — and take the appropriate corrective action to maintain safe and efficient tractor operations at all times.
Practical Operations and Transporting the Tractor
Practical Tractor Operations
This is the core practical module of the course — covering the hands-on operation of the tractor in a range of real-world applications. Learners will consequently develop practical skills across a full range of tractor operations — including:
- Before starting the tractor, stopping the engine correctly and leaving the machine safely
- Identifying and responding to stationary hazards, moving hazards, proximity hazards and ground hazards
- Applying the system of vehicle control when operating the tractor in a range of agricultural, construction and mining environments
Learner Practical Exercises
Furthermore, learners will complete a series of practical exercises under the supervision of a qualified SACTS assessor — including:
- Identifying the main parts of the tractor, manoeuvring the tractor safely into and out of position and setting up the tractor correctly
- Performing a given specific task and manoeuvring through and around various obstacles
Transporting the Tractor To and From Site
Finally, this module covers the safe loading of the tractor onto a transport vehicle for transportation to and from site — including correct positioning, securing and tie-down procedures. Furthermore, learners will learn about the legal requirements governing the transportation of tractors on public roads in South Africa — including driver’s licence requirements, road traffic legislation and the safe unloading and positioning of the tractor on site before operations begin.
