Operate an articulated dump truck
Compared to the rigid dump truck, an articulated dump truck can handle rough and unruly terrain, lower ceiling heights, restricted turning radiuses and narrow roads — making it one of the most versatile haulage vehicles in the South African construction and mining industry. Train your operators to use it safely, professionally and legally — with this CETA-accredited Articulated Dump Truck Training course from SACTS
DESCRIPTION
Unit Standard (SAQA Reg. No 262745)
Articulated dump truck training is an essential qualification for any operator required to haul materials on a construction or mining site in South Africa. Compared to the rigid dump truck, the articulated dump truck can handle rough and unruly terrain and weather, along with lower ceiling heights, restricted turning radiuses and narrow roads. Furthermore, this versatility makes the articulated dump truck one of the most widely used haulage vehicles across construction, civil engineering and mining environments throughout South Africa.Why Articulated Dump Truck Training Matters
With increasing use of this equipment there has been an increasing trend of these vehicles being involved in overturn incidents. However, when operated and maintained by competent drivers, in a properly designed and maintained environment, ADT overturns are a wholly preventable occurrence. Furthermore, the OHS Act and Construction Regulations require all construction plant operators to be trained and competent before operating any vehicle or machine on site. As a result, investing in articulated dump truck training protects your people, reduces your risk and keeps your business legally compliant
Successful learner of this standard will be able to;
- Demonstrating knowledge of the functions of an articulated dump truck.
- Planning for work activities and prepare work area.
- Starting and shutting down articulated dump truck.
- Operating articulated dump truck.
- Transporting articulated dump truck to and from site.

Description
The qualifying learner will be able to operate an articulated dump truck by understanding the functions of starting, shutting down and operating procedures for the machine. Learners who master the applied competence described in this course will contribute to the development of a professional community of Construction Plant operators. The area of focus of this programme will be;
Knowledge of the Functions of an Articulated Dump Truck
Articulated dump truck training begins with a thorough understanding of the vehicle’s function, purpose and components. This module consequently introduces learners to the role of the articulated dump truck in the construction and mining industry — covering its key applications, versatility across different terrain types and the significant advantages it offers over rigid dump trucks in challenging site conditions. Furthermore, learners will develop a thorough understanding of the ADT’s key components — including the dump body, hydraulic tipping system, articulation joint, engine, transmission, torque converter, axles, tyres, steering system, braking system, suspension system and operator’s cab. In addition, learners will be introduced to the full range of controls and instruments in the operator’s cab — including temperature gauges, pressure gauges, fuel tank level gauges, electrical system charging gauges and hour meter gauges. Furthermore, learners will develop a working knowledge of warning devices — including warning lights, hooters, buzzers, back-up alarms and the electronic/computer monitoring system. As a result, learners will be able to identify and describe the function of every major component before they begin operating the vehicle. Furthermore, learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of the personal protective equipment an articulated dump truck operator may be required to use — and the legal obligations of both the operator and the employer under the OHS Act
Planning for Work Activities and Preparing the Work Area
Before any ADT operation begins, a qualified operator must plan carefully and prepare the work area thoroughly. This module consequently equips learners with the skills to plan work activities — including receiving instructions, interpreting work instructions and completing documentation. Furthermore, learners will develop the skills to prepare the work area — including assessing the work area, checking for potential health and safety risks and identifying fixtures that need to be removed or protected. In addition, learners will develop the knowledge and practical skills to conduct comprehensive machine inspections — including the walk around inspection, pre-starting checks, pre-operating checks, operating checks and parking procedure. As a result, learners will be able to identify and report any defects or maintenance requirements before the vehicle is put into service. Furthermore, learners will develop a working knowledge of ADT maintenance requirements — including engine maintenance and general vehicle housekeeping — ensuring that the vehicle is safe, roadworthy and fully operational before every work shift.
Starting and Shutting Down the Articulated Dump Truck
A thorough pre-start inspection and correct start-up procedure is the first line of defence against mechanical failure and operator injury. This module therefore equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to conduct all required checks before starting the ADT — including the walk around inspection, pre-starting checks and pre-operating checks. Furthermore, learners will develop the practical skills to start the ADT safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications — including starting a cold engine correctly. In addition, learners will conduct preliminary tests before any haulage operations begin — ensuring that all safety-critical systems are fully functional. Furthermore, learners will understand the importance of avoiding intermittent revving and excessive idling — and how to interpret engine exhaust smoke colour as an indicator of machine health. This module also covers the correct shutdown and close-down procedures — including shutting down and parking the articulated dump truck, stopping the machine correctly, parking safely and stopping the engine.
Operating the Articulated Dump Truck
This is the core practical module of the course — covering the fundamental operating principles and hands-on skills required to operate an ADT safely and efficiently. Learners will consequently develop a thorough understanding of general operational safety aspects — including operator compartments, safety rules, site rules, working the ADT, mounting and dismounting, preliminary tests and operating defensively. Furthermore, learners will develop a thorough understanding of ADT brakes and braking — including the hydraulic retarder, the service brake and the parking brake. In addition, learners will develop practical driving skills — including driving uphill, driving downhill and off-road driving. Furthermore, learners will develop hands-on practical skills across all ADT operations — including loading, hauling, dumping and the empty return using the V-shape, L-shape and T-shape loading methods. In addition, learners will learn how to manage a lifted load body safely — and how to identify and respond to exposed high voltage cables in the vicinity of ADT operations.
Transporting, Documentation and Professional Conduct
A professional ADT operator is responsible not only for safe and efficient haulage operations — but also for accurate record keeping, clear communication and positive professional conduct on site. This module therefore equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to document machine use, report faults and problems with the machine and communicate information to other role players on site. Furthermore, learners will develop the practical skills to transport the ADT safely to and from site — including the aspects an operator must consider when loading the ADT for transportation and how to correctly load and position the ADT on the transporter. In addition, learners will develop an understanding of the importance of a positive and good attitude, being a team player, the ability to identify and solve problems, and the ability to communicate and be a team player in the workplace. As a result, learners will be able to contribute positively to a productive, safe and professional site environment — going beyond basic machine operation to become a valuable and trusted member of the construction plant team.
